The Joy of Bodywork
Fixing a bad repair job
(left) The right taillight has some damage on the inside edge and it is pushed toward center. The lens does not fit securely as a result.

(right)The fender was once smeared with bondo to offset the damage and make the lamp frame fit better.

(left) Top view shows how the lamp base is pushed in and faked with filler. It is too badly damaged to repair and needs replacement.

(right) After some gentle persuasion the light base sits more squarely with the new repair panel in place.

(left)The light base was cut away and supports inserted. I fabricated another lamp base.

(right) The new base in place ready for installation. I probably should have replaced the entire fender but this will look ok.

9/07 The finished fender

(left) The tailpipe opening took some damage from the weight of the aftermarket exhaust installation. The original plan was to repair (and restore) the damage.

(right) The  new tailpipe cutout. The panel was thrashed and the pipes look much better tucked away rather than hanging below a single pipe cutout. The hanger is now attached to the trunk floor instead of the valance.

(left) The rear valance and trunk lid took some damage from the same collision.

(right) The finished rear view.
