This is my '64 MGB. This is how it
looked when I bought it 13 years ago, good chrome, presentable
paint, good interior.
This is where the repairs began,
rust bubbles on the lower edges of the front fenders.
The real story lie beneath the
paint. Most of the metal was destroyed at the bottom ends of the
front fenders.
This is how the corrosion gets
started: this cutaway shows what little clearance is behind this
rear fender dogleg. Dirt settles in the narrow gap against the
sill trapping moisture and starting the corrosion damage.
The fenders were cut just above the
rust damage and welded to repair panels.
More rust was found on the
outer sill
(rocker panel) directly behind the fender damage. The damage
appears to be limited the areas where the fenders have corroded
so the areas will be cut out and replaced with new steel.
